Hungerford’s Role in World War II

Hungerford’s Role in World War II

This area within the county of Berkshire, on the border of Wiltshire, is rich in wartime history from the early years of the war and the creation of the Ironside (Stop Line) along the Kennet and Avon Canal and main London to Bath Railway, to the build-up to D-Day 1944.

Troops were stationed on the common and just on the outskirts of the town, a mock-up of the Merville Battery was constructed at Inkpen.

Nearby Littlecote House was one of many requisitioned properties, most notably associated with the famous 101st American Airbourne and nearby airfields at Membury and Ramsbury played a pivotal role in Operation Overlord.
