Convoy & Commemorative Weekend News

Commemorative Convoys

36 minutes 10 seconds ago

Back last year, when we started scouting around for vehicles to join this year's D-Day 80th Anniversary Convoy, we contacted a few old friends and asked them if they would like to join us again.

Of course, they jumped right on board and committed their time and vehicles to us.

Some of the vehicles that make up our convoy are not WWII era / classic vehicles…these are in the convoy for safety and security….and of course to make a bit of noise…..

You'll be able to see four of the South Coast Cop Cars vehicles in the convoy this year.

We are grateful they are with us again this year.

We'd love to tag them, but they don't run a Facebook page!

CONVOY ARRIVIAL INTO HUNGERFORD UPDATE

At the invitation of Hungerford Town Council, the D-Day 80th Anniversary Convoy will arrive in the town at approx. 12:15pm.

After driving through Charnham St, Bridge St and into the High Street, the convoy lead Royal British Legion Riders will stop the convoy opposite the Coin and Stamp Centre for approximately 10 minutes.

This will allow everyone to take photographs of this historic event.

We anticipate the convoy will reach all the way back down to Bridge Street.

Please note: we ask you for safety reasons that you DO NOT approach the vehicles, but remain on the pavements.

When the convoy moves off it will drive to the Triangle Field where you will have the opportunity to view the vehicles up close and chat with the drivers and riders.

Thank you for supporting Commemorative Convoys.

We look forward to seeing you on the 29th June 2024.

Earlier today our friends at Parkway Shopping Newbury had the pleasure of hosting our convoy choir - the Defence Academy Military Wives Choir and some members of Royal British Legion Riders Branch riders who will be escorting our convoy from Basingstoke to Hungerford on the 29th June.

Members of the convoy team were also handing out route leaflets and speaking to shoppers about the convoy.

The choir sang a few songs to entertain passing shoppers who stopped to listen even through the small rain shower.

We would like to thank Parkway Shopping Newbury for hosting them, and of course, this would not be possible without the generous support of Jones Robinson Estate Agent.

The Countdown to D-Day: 5th June 1944

Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force!

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months.

The eyes of the world are upon you.

The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory!

Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

-------

On the eve of D-Day 5th June 1944, General Dwight D Eisenhower, Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Expeditionary Force, gave a last-minute talk to paratroopers of the US 101st Airborne Division as they prepared to take off from their base at Greenham Common, Berkshire.

The officer standing before Eisenhower is Lt Wallace E Strobel, Jumpmaster of Company E, 502nd Parachute Regiment.

The American 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions were dropped on the western flank of the invasion, north of Carentan to assist the seaborne assault on the beaches and to check the movement of enemy reserves into the Cotentin peninsula.

Many of the drops were inaccurate but, in each case, the objectives were achieved.

2919 Photo: This photo was taken by Lee Sainsbury / Oxygen Photography in the grounds of Newbury College on 22nd June 2019 during the D-Day 75th Anniversary of D-Day Commemorative Convoy event.

Lee recalls:

“I wanted to try and re-create this famous photograph as a historical record of this event.

With the help of the re-enactors who were present on the day, they referenced the original photograph which I took with me and arranged themselves in a similar position.

One of the re-enactors then noticed that some of the kit was incorrect and quickly scooted off to their vehicle to obtain the correct kit. This happened a few times with various items – helmets, bags etc.

In the original photo Lt Wallace E Strobel is wearing a piece of card with the number 27 written on it. We recreated this but with the number 75 to represent the anniversary.

Once they were all in position, our “General Dwight D Eisenhower” (portrayed by Colin Wright) raised his fist into a similar position to the 1944 photograph. It’s not a perfect re-creation but it’s close and the result was achieved.

Once again – a huge thank-you to all the re-enactors involved in helping re-create this photograph."
