:: February Convoy & Weekend Event Update ::

We have recently been asked the question, "Is the convoy team responsible for organising the 29 and 30 June weekend event in Hungerford?"

As in previous years, we are responsible for creating the convoy, liaising with the relevant local authorities and the Police, sourcing and booking an assembly and arrival venue, publicity and social media and securing donations of goods and services.

For D-Day 80 Anniversary year we have, as you know. been invited to start the convoy at Milestones Living History Museum, Basingstoke.

The staff at the museum are planning to host a special welcome-to and send-off event for the convoy vehicle owners.

At the invitation of Hungerford Town Council, the convoy will, upon arrival in the town, effectively herald the start of the town's weekend programme of relevant activities to reflect the significance of this historic year.

The council-organised event is community-wide with the focus on the show site at Triangle Field.

The weekend includes:

Free camping space, with facilities, you can book via our website or call us for the booking form.

Saturday evening entertainment is planned.

Join the Saturday evening parade and attend the unveiling of the D-Day 80th Commemorative Stone on Hungerford Common, where Dwight D Eisenhower addressed thousands of troops.

Want to know more about historic Hungerford and why the town is an appropriate venue for the D-Day Anniversary event?

We recommend you visit the virtual museum which is available online at www.hungerfordvirtualmuseum.co.uk

The website contains lots of fascinating WW2 information and photographs.

The Countdown to D-Day - February 1944

Over a long period, Allied air forces – RAF Bomber Command, and the United States Army Air Force’s 8th Air Force – have been making a series of heavy air raids against German cities.

German fighter aircraft defend against these attacks, and there are heavy casualties on both sides in this aerial fighting. Many German civilians are also killed. The Germans are less able to replace these losses of airmen and aircraft than the Allies.

As a result, by the time of D-Day the German air force will not be strong enough to oppose the Allied landings in France.

The Countdown to D-Day - January 1944

MIDGET SUBMARINES of the Combined Operations Pilotage Parties – COPP – secretly visit the Normandy beaches to take sand samples.

These are needed to confirm that the sand on certain sections of the chosen landing beaches will support the weight of the tanks that the Allies plan to land on D-Day.

Across many parts of Europe, including France, British and US aircraft began to drop weapons and supplies to the Resistance.

This would enable them to fight back against the occupying Germans.

Back in November 2023, a special piece of music was played for us by Iona Scotson - Senior Pipe Major at Gordon's School.

Assisted by a group of veterans, Iona played “Flowers of The Forest”.

Many of you will have heard this tune before but may not know the name.

Solo bagpipe versions of the song are used at services of remembrance, funerals, and other occasions; many in the Commonwealth know the tune simply as "The Lament" which is played at Remembrance Day or Remembrance Sunday ceremonies to commemorate war dead.

You can view the video here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrSo0NMi9wY

We'd like to thank:

- St Lawrence's Church in Hungerford for allowing us to use the church to film this piece.

- Our group of Royal British Legion members and veterans who joined us for the filming.

- Iona Scotson for travelling down to us so we could film this piece.

You can see and hear Iona and other members of Gordon’s School Pipes and Drums on our Commemorative Weekend in June 2024.
